ORGANIC IN THE GARDEN – GRASS HAY – THE OLDER AND WETTER T...

Grass hay is an excellent organic ingredient for the backyard gardener. It has in the past been avoided due to the possibility of transferring weed seeds into the vegetable garden but quality composting methods have slowly made it a more popular ingredient. Some years ago when I was first trialing grass hay in the compost, I placed an ad in the wanted to buy section of the local paper. The ad simply read "Wanted - Grass Hay - The older and wetter the better - Suitable for Garden mulch and composting" It was a simple ad so I was surprised by the number of phone calls I got. When the hay is wet and old keeping it in a bale is no easy task but I managed to get several bales home. I kept a couple of bales for adding to compost between layers of lawn clippings and I used the rest of the bales on my pre existing vegetable garden The Hay was quiet old and half rotten so it didn't take long to break down. The following season there was sufficient rotten hay to plant several rows of tomatoes in without breaking the soil surface. These tomatoes grew almost to .. more »

Growing from seed is the most elemental part of vegetable gardening, and I want to take a look at the overall process, hopefully giving new gardeners something to think about. While quite a few vegetables are easier to grow from sets and cuttings, in most cases you will be growing from seeds. The first thing to determine, if possible, is the most appropriate soil type for the vegetable you want to plant. A quick check on Google or in any gardening book will soon provide the answer. Again, there's a huge variance between plants when it comes to how deep the hole needs to be - leek seeds for example require shallow holes a quarter of an inch deep, while radish seeds require deeper holes of up to 6 inches. The distance you'll need to put between .. more »

Are you a plant killer? Did your tomatoes fail to produce again? If so, hydroponic gardening may be just the thing for you.Exactly what is hydroponic gardening? To put it simply, hydroponic gardening is growing plants without soil. Instead of using soil, plants are grown using a nutrient solution. Plants can either be grown with their roots in a mineral solution only or in another type of growing medium such as perlite, gravel or rockwool. In normal plant growth, the soil holds the mineral nutrients that the plants need to grow, but the soil itself isn't essential. The soil is just acting as a reservoir or a place to store the nutrients that the plants need in order to grow. In hydroponic gardening, the nutrients are in the water supply that goes to the plants roots. There are two main types of hydroponics: solution culture and medium culture. The different types of medium are:? Diahydro - a natural sedimentary rock medium? Expanded clay - small, round baked spheres of clay? .. more »
