WHY GROW A CANNING GARDEN?

Growing a garden specifically for canning or freezing foods is a popular hobby mainly because gardeners know just how much healthier home grown food is for their families, especially when compared to a lot of what's available at your local grocery store. If you're just starting out, growing a garden for canning can quite easy or complex, whichever you choose. How complex depends on the personal preferences and desires of you, the gardener.Canning gardens are actually general vegetable gardens with the intended purpose of canning the harvested produce. Anything you eat fresh can be used for canning, which is why so many gardeners simply plant extra vegetables so they'll have part of the harvest for eating fresh and the rest for canning. In many cases, however, experience shows that some varieties of vegetables are better for canning than others. Thus, if you want to plant a vegetable garden specifically for canning, you should try the species which are known to work best.Start by considering the type of canning you're planning to do. If you plan to can tomatoes, for instance, will they be whole, peeled, or chopped? Perhaps you're more interested in making tomato sauces and pastes, or various marinara sauces .. more »

LANDSCAPE GARDENING: TREE ARRANGEMENT

Landscape gardening is like the painting of a picture. A good picture often has a point of chief interest, and the rest of the points simply forms a fine setting for it. In landscape gardening, the gardener has a clear picture in his mind what the whole will be once the work is completed. The design of gardening should have a central element or focal point to catches the eyes - a special tree or bush, fountains or statues. Garden gnomes are very popular in Europe, and it's not a surprise to see gnomes in the states either. Seasonal and holiday flags can all be architectural focal points.A good extent of open lawn space is always beautiful and restful. It adds a feeling of space to even small grounds. If the lawn space is covered with many trees, and with little flower beds here and there, the general effect is choppy and fussy. It is a bit like an over-dressed person. A single tree or a small group, in fact, is a more elegant arrangement. Do not center the tree or trees, instead let them drop a bit into the background. In choosing trees one must keep in mind a number .. more »

RAGDOLL CATS

Ragdoll cats come in a variety of colors, patterns and size. My ragdoll, Stoli, is what you would call a pointed flame with mitted paws. Let me explain.Ragdolls have approx. 6 different colors - seal, chocolate, flame, and "dilutes" blue, lilac and cream. Three different patterns are typical with ragdoll cats and kittens: Pointed - which means their nose, ears, tail and paws are in specific colors with no white. Mitted is self explanatory - white paws, chin and tummy, with or without a blaze which is a white line on the face. Bicolor-white tall socks, white inverted 'V' on the face, white tummy and often white patches on the back. Differences include a three-color "tortie-point" mottled seal or blue with red present and lynx - striped pattern on tail, face and points which can be found in all 3 patterns.Adult ragdolls can be quite big. They are a large sized cat breed. Males average between 15-20 pounds while Females are smaller and weigh 10-15 pounds on average. Ragdolls are slow maturing breeds, meaning they reach full coat color at around two years of age and full size and weight at four years. The Ragdoll cat typically has a very gentle .. more »
